the Story of Wasp Women Pilots

During World War II, the women of WASP, (Women Airforce Service Pilots) flew alongside their brothers to help train pilots and test new fighter planes. These WASPs were stationed at bases all over the United States and flew over 60 million miles assigned to the same duties as their male counterparts. Some duties, such as test piloting new planes not yet deemed safe to fly, were done by these brave WASPs. Unfortunately when all was said and done, the WASPs were sent home and all but forgotten after World War II.
It wasn’t until 1977 that the WASPs earned their veteran status, and it wasn’t until recently that the WASPs earned a congressional Medal of Honor for their service, much of it due to the project Wings Across America, started by Nancy Parrish, daughter of former WASP Deanie Parrish.
