A Fairy Tale Rewrite Project

An Online and Videoconferencing Project by and for Texas 3rd/4th and 6th/ 7th Grade Students

How would a classic fairy tale read if it was rewritten for modern times?

Let’s find out!  Students can turn on their creative skills, thinks about our life and times today, and put their twist on a favorite fairy tale or fable.  How would it change?  Would a GPS device be a part of the story?  Would an iPad® be used?  This project is a nice way for students to begin preparation for TAKS writing for 2010 – 2011 or as a culminating activity to practice what they have already learned.

Project Guidelines, Suggestions, and Timelines

  • Students can work individually, in groups, or a class story can be submitted.  Teachers are encouraged to have students work in pairs or groups.
  • Students should pick a fairy tale or fable that they want to rewrite.
  • Stories can be submitted in one of two categories:  Video (using any video creator,  Point show, etc.) OR Text (Word, PDF)
  • Students are encouraged to create pictures and artwork that compliments their story.
  • As soon as possible, but no later than April 28, 2010, teachers should register on the project web page at http://www.tetnplus.net/fairytale.aspx indicating that they want to participate.  Stories do NOT need to be completed by this date.
  • Registered teachers will be given directions on how to submit their students’ stories.  All stories should be submitted by no later than May 7, 2010 and will be posted on our web site for public viewing and commenting.
  • During the week of May 10th – 14th, students can visit the web site to read or view other students’ stories and make comments.  They will also be able to view the comments that other students made about their stories!
  • On May 18th from 9:30 – 10:30 am (for 3rd/4th grade) and May 19th from 9:30 – 10:30 am (for 6th/7th grade), we will conduct statewide videoconferences and have some of the students read (or act out) their stories.  We will show a few of the videos submitted too! Teachers will be asked if they want to have their students participate in this activity.  We’ll have time for students to meet some of their favorite fellow student authors.  NOTE: You can still participate in the project even if you are unable to make the videoconference.
